“One memorable luncheon was just women and Uncle George. Those women were Vivien Leigh, Katharine Hepburn, and Simone Signoret and myself. What an extraordinary lunch—just—these women and those ideas…There was a bit of a crisis going, because we were outside, and we heard shouting up on the hillside. This was up by Cordell Drive, so there was a house above us, and everyone had a different reaction. George [Cukor] was for ignoring it; Katharine Hepburn was already half way up the hill to solve the problem; Signoret was maybe a quarter of the way up the hill, and Vivien Leigh was just pouring herself another champaign, you know, ‘my dear, dear, dear,’ because it was these screams that we were hearing and we all had a very, very separate reaction.”

—Mia Farrow on lunch parties at George Cukor’s
