I’m sorry this is long.
This past May I adopted a beautiful seal point Siamese cat from the Southern CA Siamese Rescue. When I saw her picture on the adoption website, I knew she was the one for me. She was about 5 years old, had an imperial air, a beautiful face with the prettiest blue eyes, and to top it off, her name was Coco. Coco Bean? It was destiny!
The rescue center didn’t know much about her life prior to being brought to the shelter, just that she had been abandoned and was wandering the mean streets of Los Angeles before a kind lady saw her, started feeding her, and brought her to the rescue center. The foster person that I picked her up from, Sam, said that Coco had needed two teeth extracted because of decay, and she was really shy because she had been through so much in such a short period. She was hiding behind Sam’s toilet, hunched up in a little ball, but she let me pet her without hissing at me—a miracle, Sam said. So I brought her home with me.
The first night I had her home, she hid under the bed until the middle of the night when she jumped up and explored my window and the perimeter of my bedroom. It wasn’t long before she started sleeping on my bed and demanding attention. She loves to have her back and chin scratched! She also loves catnip!
About a month later, I noticed she had become very lethargic and would drool a lot. I assumed it was because she was older, but when she stopped eating I took her to the vet and they discovered a bloody ulcer in her mouth. The vet diagnosed her with stomatitis which is a bacterial infection that causes severe gingivitis and is very painful. So she was put on antibiotics and steroids. Other than that, her blood tests and everything came out normal. The vet informed me that in worst case scenarios they usually end up removing all of the cat’s teeth and then it would go away for good.
The first round of antibiotics worked like a charm. Coco was happier and healthier than ever. She wasn’t hiding, she was playing with her catnip strawberry, and purring up a storm. 6 weeks later, she started making funny noises after trying to eat and I knew her stomatitis was back. The vet gave me a refill on her medicine and everything seemed to be okay. She even put on some weight (up to 10 lbs now—fluffy kitty!)!
I’ve been really stressed out for a while because of the expense of Coco’s bills. My mom hassles me about it and she and my dad pressure me to give her back to the shelter. “The writing’s on the wall, they say.” But it’s not that easy for me. Coco is too sweet and I love her too much to just hand her back over. I promised to be her forever home and I don’t want to let her down if I can help it. So I emailed the director of the rescue center to ask for advice, and she informed me that if I give Coco back, there is a chance she will be euthanized. I can’t let that happen!! She’s not terminally ill or anything—it’s not like she has kidney failure, or heart disease or cancer.
Anyway, Coco finished her second round of meds last week, and I took her in for a follow-up visit today. The meds apparently didn’t work. Coco’s gums are terribly inflamed and the back ones even have pus on them. When the vet told me Coco really needed a full mouth extraction (except for the front teeth), I burst into tears. I think she wanted to cry at my distress as well. She said she wouldn’t let Coco be put to sleep, and that she could set up a payment plan for me. Still, I didn’t know what to do.
So now I’m faced with a really difficult choice. I either come up with enough money within the next month or so (the surgery will cost about $1300—that’s with the $300 discount the vet gave me out of what I assume was pity), or I have give Coco back up for adoption with the chance she might be put to sleep. I love her too much to just give her up.
If I had enough money to get her surgery right now I’d do it without hesitation, but under the current circumstances, I just can’t afford it.
So I’m asking for your help. If you’d like to give a donation to help pay for Coco’s oral surgery, I’ve set up a paypal account in her honor. I know times are tough for everyone so I’m not expecting anything. But if you would like to help in any way, I would appreciate it from the bottom of my heart. If enough funds can’t be raised, I will refund anyone and everyone who donated.
The link to the paypal account is HERE, & my email for paypal is kendrabean@gmail.com
I am also listing a bunch of movie memorabilia on ebay in effort to raise money.
Thanks for reading, everyone. If any of you would like to pass this on, that would be amazing ♥
