One of the most difficult makeup problems of the decade was posed by the epic saga Gone With the Wind. Producer David O. Selznick, a noted perfectionist, became obsessed with the color of Scarlett O’Hara’s eyes, which were green in the novel. Selznick wrote memo after memo to Mont Westmore, raging that in various scenes Vivien Leigh’s eyes were not green but “violet, gray, blue, and nearly every other color in the spectrum.” Mont finally solved the problem with colorful clothes highlighting the green in Leigh’s multi-hued hazel eyes, intensifying the effect by extravagant use of green eye shadow. Selznick, said Hollywood wags, never could figure out how Mont wrought the “Miracle of the Green Eyes.”
